Best Electric Cars Coming in 2022

Next year will see a deluge of new electric models arrive in Ireland, some more exciting than others.

If you thought lots of electric vehicles were launched in Ireland this year, then brace yourselves because 2022 will see even more. Every major brand will launch something, and we just hope that the charging network will be able to keep up. We’ve left out a few that we’re excited about such as the Hyundai Ioniq 6 and Renault 5 because they might only arrive in 2023, but that still leaves lots of excellent choices to start considering now.

BMW iX

BMW iX

BMW has been in the electric game for years but like many rivals is really moving into the space now. Next year will see the first full year of its new flagship, the iX. It’s difficult to be nice about its styling so we won’t even try, but it should be a good electric vehicle with lots of space, comfort and the latest tech.

Cupra Born

CUPRA Born Ireland

This one we are excited about, not just because Cupra makes good performance models, but because the Born will be based on the Volkswagen ID.3 platform but with much cooler looks inside and out, as well as performance and practical range.

Kia EV6

Kia EV6 Ireland

Kia has taken the platform of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and created something that looks like a cross between a spaceship and an Aston Martin DBX. We think it looks fantastic, plus it will have a choice of power outputs up to 305hp and a driving range up to 480km.

Nissan Ariya

Nissan Ariya Ireland

Nissan plans to electrify the new Qashqai next year by using a small petrol engine as a generator for an electric motor. If you want proper electric then you’ll be wanting the Ariya, which offers unique looks, has two electric motors and a choice of batteries depending on how much range you want available.

Porsche Macan Electric

Porsche Macan Electric

This is not to be confused with the facelifted Porsche Macan, which isn’t electric and that is also coming next year. The Macan Electric is all-new and promises performance and comfort but with cleaner and quieter motoring. Given the tax rules, it should also be cheaper than petrol models, which will make for some interesting decisions.

Tesla Model Y

Tesla Model Y Ireland

Lots of new Tesla models promised for 2022, but whether they will all arrive is anyone’s guess. The Cybertruck seems the least likely to ever make it to production and while there have been delays, we could see the second-generation Tesla Roadster. The updated Model S will come along and so too will this, the new Model Y crossover, which is like an inflated Model 3 that has space for up to seven people.

Volkswagen ID.5

Volkswagen ID5

Volkswagen is on a charge, sorry for the pun, but it is. First the ID.3, then the ID.4, and now there’s a coupe-like version of it, the ID.5. It’s likely to be a little more sporty but equally as practical when it arrives, plus there will be a high-performance GTX version.

Volvo C40 Recharge

Volvo C40 Recharge Electric

Like the VW ID.5, the C40 is a coupe-style version of a small SUV, in this case the XC40 Recharge. That means great looks combined with two electric motors and performance that will shame many a sports car. It should also be able to provide 400km of range.
