Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer review

Volkswagen adds a handsome estate to the all-electric ID.7 range.

Pros: Big boot, comfort, quality.

Cons: Some frustrating cabin controls, no heat pump as standard.

Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer Design

To date estate cars haven’t been big sellers in Ireland, but the new ID.7 Tourer might change your mind. Not only does it offer even more boot space than the saloon, but it’s all packaged rather handsomely. The front end is identical to the saloon with a smooth, aerodynamic design but the elongated rear end and few dynamic design lines give it a more attractive, sporty stance. Matrix LEDs are included as standard across the range and the VW badge lights up at the front and rear. The standard wheel size is 19-inch, but you can upgrade to 20s, which is the default size for the new range-topping GTX version.

Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer Interior

The cabin has the same plush quality finish as the saloon, characterised by a simple, minimalist design and subtle ambient lighting. Standard features include a slim digital driver display, head-up display and 15-inch touchscreen using the brand’s latest software that is an improvement on earlier ID cars. There is still a heavy reliance on touch control, but there is an improved menu structure, voice control and shortcuts to make it easier to navigate. A few frustrations remain like the gloss black haptic buttons on the steering wheel that detract from the overall quality. There are also just two window control buttons and a third button marked rear that toggles between opening the front and rear windows, which can be a bit cumbersome to use. But the ID.7 Tourer redeems itself with the cabin's outright comfort and upmarket feel, as well as a generous equipment list including heated steering wheel and heated front massage seats with power adjustment, memory function, lumbar support and adjustable thigh support. Ideal for those long trips on the motorway.

The practicality of the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform also shines through with limo-like amounts of legroom in the back and a 605-litre boot that is better than the BMW i5 Touring for its load-lugging capabilities. The sill is flat and low for getting things in and out, and levers are also included to fold down the rear seats remotely. They fold relatively flat in a 60:40 layout.

Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer Performance & Drive

Just like the saloon, the ID.7 Tourer is available with choice of 77kWh (607 km range) or 86kWh (690 km range) lithium-ion battery. The larger battery is available for the Pro S Plus trim and top of the range, four wheel drive GTX. We were driving the 77kWh, which uses a 286hp motor to power the rear wheels and feels brisk on the road with 0-100km/h in just 6.6 seconds. The Tourer is really smooth and effortless to drive, with excellent levels of comfort and refinement across all types of Irish roads. There’s the option of Dynamic Chassis Control for even more adjustment between comfort and a firmer, more controlled drive. While it’s not as engaging as a BMW i4, it feels reassuringly solid with accurate steering that makes it very easy to place on the road and less tiring to drive on the motorway.

Fast charging capabilities are impressive at up to 175kW for the 77kWh and up to 200kW for the 86kWh version. A heat pump remains an option but battery preconditioning is included as standard. Energy consumption can be as low as 14.6kWh per 100 kilometres but during our test in a damp February we averaged closer to 19kWh, which translates to roughly 400 kilometres of real world range.

Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer Pricing

The ID.7 Tourer Pro Plus comes with the 77kWh battery and is priced from €56,490 including grants, which is the same price as the saloon. Step up to the 86kWh Pro S Plus and the starting price goes up to €66,290 or from €74,290 for the range-topping GTX.

Carzone Verdict

The Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer is a brilliant estate car that also happens to be electric. It looks great and is comfortable and spacious inside, while offering good range and efficiency. A great buy if it's in your budget.
