Pros: Stunning, well-appointed cabin, comfort.
Cons: Too many screens and menus, not as engaging as the best sports cars.
MG Cyberster GT Design
MG made its name building sports cars like the MGB back in the 60s and 70s but it's been more about affordable electric cars and hybrid SUVs since the brand relaunched under Chinese ownership. Until now. MG has gone straight to electric to revive its sports car past in the shape of the gorgeous new Cyberster. Designed in MG’s London studio, its classic sports car proportions and sleek, aerodynamic design turn heads wherever it goes. And that’s before you even open the scissor doors, which are a standard feature.
There’s a beautiful, high-end finish to this car and it really shines in Dynamic Red. The GT is shod with special 20-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zeros. Stopping power is courtesy of Brembos up front and Continental high-performance brakes at the rear.
MG Cyberster GT Interior
MG has done a marvellous job with the interior. It feels instantly special from behind the wheel. The fit and finish is excellent with an incredibly sporty wraparound digital display and steering wheel. Other notables are the leather-style sports seats. There’s the choice of a black and red interior, or white and grey.
It’s not all good however. Even though MG has used a relatively thin battery design, the driving position is surprisingly high for a sports car and you never feel quite at one with it from behind the wheel. The wraparound digital display and separate climate display looks modern and high-tech, but there is a bewildering amount of menus and your view of the screens is somewhat restricted by the steering wheel.
Otherwise this is a class act with plenty of comfort features like heated seats with power adjustment, heated steering wheel and Bose stereo. For a sports car there’s also a surprising number of storage compartments and two sturdy cupholders.
The boot is also quite practical for a sports car. 249 litres sounds measly but it goes back a good deal and has enough depth for a small suitcase or two. The scissor doors have sensors to avoid any mishaps but it can get tiresome opening and closing them.
MG Cyberster GT Performance & Drive
The Cyberster is available as single motor, rear wheel drive with 340hp or you can opt for the full fat GT with a whopping 503hp and 725Nm of torque from a motor on both the front and rear axle. 0-100 is just 3.2 seconds. The MG can shuffle between a few different driving modes that unleash more and more of the power and performance. The Comfort mode is relatively sedate and the Cyberster can cruise effortlessly offering a very smooth and comfortable drive for a roadster. It feels more alert and playful in Sport mode with heavier steering and much more responsive accelerator pedal. When pushing on, the Cyberster can dip and dive into corners with plenty of composure and grip, though the steering lacks the feel and communication of the best set-ups. The Cyberster’s considerable kerb weight (1985kg) also comes in to play and it just falls short of the agility of the best sports cars. Super Sport mode unleashes blistering acceleration and Launch Control.
The 77kWh battery has a range up to 443 kilometres (WLTP), with the GT sacrificing some range and efficiency for more pace. The official consumption is rated at 19.1 kWh per 100 kilometres, though consumption was higher during our winter test. There are a few levels of regenerative braking and a full one pedal driving mode.
The Cyberster GT has 7kW AC charging and up to 144kW DC fast charging. That’s okay for a 10-80% charge in 38 minutes but not as fast as the likes of a Porsche Taycan or Hyundai Ioniq 5 N at a suitably rapid charger.
MG Cyberster GT Pricing
The Cyberster Exclusive (single motor) retails from €69,900 and the GT tested here from €75,500.
Carzone Verdict
The Cyberster is one of the most interesting and surprising cars to come to market in quite a while. It’s beautifully finished inside and out, drives well and has acceptable range. It’s not the perfect sports car and lacks some emotion and dynamic charm, but its good looks and rarity on the market still make it something special.
