Audi A5 review

Replacing the ever loved A4, can the new Audi A5 Saloon start where its predecessor left off?

The all-new Audi A5 Saloon is the new name for the Audi A4, which name is now rumoured to be set aside for an all-electric model coming in the future.

Audi A5 Exterior Design

Aside from a new name and badge, changes from A4 it replaces are reasonably subtle. From the front, the most noticeable updates is the larger grille and chunkier headlights. At the side the A5 Saloon gets flush door handles that rounds the silhouette of the vehicle very nicely. The rear is probably the most striking part, with a new full width patterned light bar announcing its presence on the road.

Audi A5 Interior Design

On the inside, you are met with a huge double touchscreen in front of the driver’s seat for infotainment and the instrument display. Our test car was also equipped with the optional third screen that sits in front of the passenger seat and allows them to interact with the infotainment system directly. I can’t see this add-on being popular, I felt as though there was far too much going on with three screens across the dash, and the passenger should be able to interact with the middle one easy enough anyway.

The boot is particularly deep which we would be used to from the A5, with a total of 445-litres, allowing plenty of space for luggage and shopping.

Audi A5 Performance

Customers can choose from high-performance Petrol TFSI and Diesel TDI engines. Some of the engine variants feature Audi’s mild hybrid technology and are combined with quattro all-wheel drive for improved traction.

Our test car was the 40 TDI 204 BHP S Line Automatic. The diesel engine was fun to drive and sounded great, particular for motorway driving for which I feel this car is well suited. Steering was sharp and driver assistance features kicked in nicely for effortless driving on long-journeys.

Audi A5 Price Ireland

The new Audi A5 Saloon starts at €55,700 in Ireland for the entry-level SE trim. There is also an A5 Edition One available for a limited time, which includes complimentary Tech Pack including Adaptive Cruise Control, Park Assist, Rear View Camera and more, starting at €59,020. This option is just available with the Diesel TDI engine.

Audi A5 Verdict

With the A4 being a best-seller for Audi for so many years, it makes sense that they didn’t stray too far from the executive saloon so many of us knew and loved. It’s a good-looking comfortable car packed with technology that does not disappoint.
