Will the rules for importing a U.K. car change after January? I am considering changing my car (I am English) but lately, and for family compassionate reasons... I am having to spend more and more time in Ireland... if I purchase one in the U.K. I don’t wan to get lumbered with excessive duty if I am forced to re register it further down the line... impossible to know exactly what the future holds but I don’t want to break the law either. Can you help?
Hi Tony,
The big unknown is Brexit. As it stands, there will be additional duty to pay if there is a no-deal exit by the UK. That duty would likely be 10 per cent of the car landed in Ireland, including shipping.
Of course, on top of that, anybody importing a car has a pay VRT and a NOx levy. There are some changes to that in January as well, making it more expensive to import more polluting cars. Saying that, if you've owned a car for over six months in the UK, and can prove it, then you can bring a car in without paying VRT.
