EPC stands for Electronic Power Control, and if that lights up and stays on when the car is running, then it means there's likely an issue with the throttle system in the car. It'll probably go into limp-home mode with reduced power until the issue is resolved. There isn't really any early signs that might hint at this, other than bad engine running, perhaps. If it does come on, you should get the car to a good mechanic with a diagnostic computer so they can assess what the problem is.
