It’s a bit of a meaningless phrase now, devalued by too much use on cars that don’t deserve it, but originally it meant Gran Tursimo, or Grand Tourer – the sort of sporty, low-slung, powerful, but comfortable car that could take two occupants across Europe in a single day’s driving. Think Ferrari 365GTB/4 Daytona or, more recently, Aston Martin DB9.
