They’re not bad cars and they’re certainly a little different from the Audi A3/BMW 1 Series/Mercedes C-Class norm, but there were quite a few problems reported on them during their lifetimes. The biggest issue was a potential engine fire from a coolant leak, which your car might be affected by – Volvo is issuing a recall on this matter in various markets and a dealer should be able to tell you if this might happen to the V40. The other issue your car falls into the timeframe of is a potential cracked fuel hose, which causes a fuel leak. Get the car’s VIN and registration and do some checks with a dealer first, but if it comes up clean on these scores and it has a full service history, there’s no reason to avoid it.
