Should I hold onto my diesel?

Should I hold onto my diesel?

Should I hold onto my diesel or bite the bullet and go hybrid? Is diesel going to phased out?

Our answer:

Hi Craig,

That is indeed a tricky question to answer as everyone's needs are different. First up: diesel the fuel isn't being phased out any time soon so you don't need to worry about that. In theory, new diesel cars can be sold up to 2035 according to current plans, but we wouldn't be surprised if those change.

As ever, diesel is best suited to those that cover long distances regularly, especially at motorway speeds. Everywhere else, hybrid power is usually a better option, certainly when you take into consideration the likely maintenance costs of a diesel engine subjected to low-speed, low-heat driving.

Of course, diesel vehicles are usually better at towing, as well.

Now, saying all of that, unless I had a specific need for a diesel-powered vehicle, I'd be a little worried about buying one for long-term ownership as demand for them on the used market may wane in time and resale values may tumble.
