Looking at buying a Volvo XC90...

I am looking at buying a 2020/2021 Volvo XC90. Is there any value in buying in Northern Ireland and then paying the VRT? Does buying diesel or PHEV make any difference to the VRT payable?

Our answer:

Hi Colm,

You may find more choice in the North, and more high-spec models, but it will only be potentially worthwhile if you can ensure that you are not also liable for VAT and customs duty. Take your time to do the research on a selection of models from the North that fit the bill, and compare them to cars already in the South.

There is likely to be a large difference in VRT between the diesel and PHEV models (to the benefit of the PHEV) as the latter's CO2 rating will be much lower, resulting in a lower VRT band.
