Issues with Opel Insignia chains?

opel insignias 1.6CDTI and 1.5CDTI tend to have problems with the timing chains - lot of noise, stretching etc. - how would you evaluate the engines reliability and this issues with the timings chains? thank you :)

Our answer:

Hi Miguel,

The 1.6 CDTi engine used to have issues for sure, stemming from what appeared to be a design flaw with the tensioner. This would lead to loud start-up rattles and eventually stretched timing chains and it's a big job to replace the tensioner and chain as it's all on the gearbox side of the engine. I believe there was a fix for this implemented in newer engines that could also be applied to older ones when the chain and tensioner are replaced.

The newer 1.5-litre diesel engine is completely different and I'm not aware that it has the same problems.
