I'm looking at a 2008 Volvo C30 R-Design 1.6d with 75k miles for 7500 but have been told by a mechanic that this particular engine is very troublesome. Would you agree? This car is a recent UK import. Anything to be mindful of when purchasing a UK car?
Hi John,
The Volvo 1.6d engine is the same 1.6 diesel as used by Ford, Peugeot, Citroen and MINI. While it does have one or two weaknesses, it’s not especially unreliable as long as it’s been properly cared for. The weak points are the oil and water pumps and the fact that if you don’t use a high quality oil at service time, the engine’s head can get clogged up with heavy, oily gunge. Aside from that, it’s a good engine.
