I’ve just realised, a car I bought last November to fix up and get on the road for the summer, that I never declared it off the road. The car genuinely off the road. When going to tax it today July 1st, there’s a whopping €500 arrears on it. What options do I have? If I can’t eliminate the arrears I’ll be forced to sell it, but will the new owner be liable for these arrears then?
Hi Pat,
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the declaration has to be made before hand - it cannot be done afterwards. Even if you sell the car, you are responsible for the arrears. Try to get some sort of documentation or Garda-witnessed statement to support your situation and then write to the local motor tax office to plead your case, but we have no idea if there is ever any leniency in these situations.
