My 14-year-old Grandson is mad about cars. His dream is to become a Formula 1 team mechanic. How does he get there, please? Is there a route for engneers like there is for drivers?
Hi Robin,
I don't believe there's a simple route to that, just as there isn't for the drivers, either. If he's adamant he wants to be an F1 mechanic that goes to all the races, as opposed to one of the engineers that design and develop the cars, he'll likely need to serve his time as a mechanic and while doing that get as much motorsport experience as possible. If he's staying in Ireland during all that time, then he needs to spend a lot of time at Mondello getting to know everyone and offering his assistance to race teams and drivers. Indeed, it might be worth getting in touch with Mondello to see if they will take him for work experience in their own workshops, too.
It'll then be all about the contacts he makes and, in truth, it won't be easy to do from Ireland. He may have to consider moving to the UK, close to the Silverstone area, if he's very serious about that.
That's a while away, obviously, but no harm in the mean time trying to get as much practical mechanic experience as he can, preferably in a motorsport environment.
Best of luck to him!
