Costs to import this Zafira?

Hi, I'm looking at buying private car from the north to south of Ireland, vauxhall Zafira Reg, LXZ 5011 1.6D , WOULD YOU KNOW WHAT COST I WILL HAVE TO PAY VRT AND ANY VAT, THANKS ANDY

Our answer:

Hi Andrew,

First up, it appears that car has been in Northern Ireland since at least 2020 so we don't believe you'll have any VAT or import duty to pay. You will need to prove that fact however, so make sure you check the paperwork.

VRT depends on the Open Market Selling Price (OMSP), which is the value of the car in the south according to Revenue, and the VRT band determined by the CO2 emissions rating.

Looking that car up, the CO2 rating is 119g/km, though that's on the old "NEDC" system. On importation to the south, Revenue "uplifts" the figure to an WLTP-equivalent number which would be 145g/km in this case, placing the car in VRT band 15, at 21.5 per cent.

It's not so easy to guess what OMSP Revenue will put on the car. We'd estimate €8,000, which would mean a VRT bill of €1,720.

Don't forget you will also be liable for the NOx levy, which could be quite steep for an older diesel model such as that.
