Well, the best ones are the biggest, but they’re also very expensive – try the sublime Volvo XC90 T8 Twin Engine out for size if you’ve got a big family, or give the smaller XC60 T8 Twin Engine a whirl if you’ve only got two kids. Alternatively, the Audi Q7 e-tron and the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid are well worth consideration, while the Lexus RX might suit if you don’t want a plug-in hybrid; do bear in mind that the RX, though, does not run on its electric power alone for any significant distance, instead using its hybrid system to eke out its fuel resources. Lexus does a seven-seat RX L version, if you need it.

Lower down the size and price scale, Toyota does the RAV4 Hybrid, but this is not one of our favourites, truth be told. So have a look at Europe’s best-selling plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, or even give the brand-new Honda CR-V Hybrid a try – again, like the Lexus RX, the CR-V Hybrid is not a PHEV, but it does make a lot of sense as an alternative to diesel.
